Notice of Examination

 

            The Springfield Township Civil Service Commission (Delaware County, PA) hereby gives notice that an entry level examination for the position of Police Officer in Springfield Township police Department will be administered on Thursday, December 6, 2007 at 3:00 PM and 7:00 PM  (prevailing time) at the Springfield Senior High School located at 49 West Leamy Avenue, Springfield, PA 19064.

 

Minimum Requirements

            In addition to being a United States citizen, being physically and mentally fit to perform the duties of a police officer, and possessing a valid and current Pennsylvania motor vehicle operator�s license, applicants:

1.      Will be required to complete a Preliminary Application for Written Examination (upon passing the written examination will be required to file a final application). Applicant will be required to submit a thirty five dollar $35.00) non-refundable fee in the form of a money order or personel check (no cash will be excepted).  Upon passing the written examination, applicant will be required to file a final application);

2.      All applicants must have reached their 21st birthday before the deadline fir submitting final application;

3.      All applications for a position in the Police Department shall poses a high school diploma or GED certificate, plus an Associate Degree or 60 credit hours from an accredited institution of higher education and must have successfully completed Act 120 Training as certified by a Municipal Police Officer�s Education and Training Commission (MPOETC). The following waivers to the education requirements are available:

a.       60 Credit hours waived for applicants with at least two (2)years experience as a full-time police officer as certified by MPOETC.

b.      30 credit hours waived for applicants with at least two (2) years experience as a full-time police officer, as certified by MPOETC.

c.       Determination of relevant experience will be made by the Springfield Township Civil Service Commission on a case-by-case basis.

4. The job description of Police Officer and essential duties of a patrolman are available for inspection at the Township offices during normal business hours.

 

Application: Applicants meeting the above qualifications may obtain a Preliminary Application at the Police Department, 50 Powell Road, Springfield, PA 19064. Completed preliminary Applications may be returned to the Police Department only during the hours of 9 AM and 4 PM, Monday through Friday.

 

Filing Deadline: All Preliminary Applications for the position of Police Officer shall be filed no later than Friday, November 30, 2007 at 4 PM (prevailing time).

 

Filing shall be accomplished by submitting the completed application together with all necessary photocopies and transcripts of each degree attained and college or university attended.  Applications will only be accepted upon the completion of all above listed requirements and posting the thirty five dollar ($35) non-refundable filing fee.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF A POLICE OFFICER

 

 

  1. Running for several hundred yards;

 

  1. Climbing over obstacles;

 

  1. Crawling;

 

  1. Pushing motor vehicles;

 

  1. Pulling or carrying accident, fire or crime victims;

 

  1. Using physical force to apprehend and subdue arrestees;

 

  1. Withstanding prolonged exposure, as long as eight hours, to extreme weather conditions;

 

  1. Withstanding prolonged periods of sitting or standing;

 

  1. Withstanding frequent exposures to stress-producing situations such as encountering persons injured or killed by accidents, crimes, or suicides;

 

  1. Dealing with domestic disputes;

 

  1. Dealing with physical and verbal abuse of the Officer, including taunts, insults, and threats to the Officer, family members, and fellow officers;

 

  1. Communicating effectively with individuals  suffering from trauma;

 

  1. Operating a motor vehicle for long periods of time;

 

  1. Becoming proficient with a firearm including the possible use of deadly force and;

 

  1. Filling out written reports in a clear and concise manner.

DUTIES OF PATROLMAN

 

He is charged with the following duties and responsibilities:

 

  1. Executes to the best of his ability all orders given by his superior officers and cooperate with all other units in The Police Department. He shall be under the immediate supervision of the sergeant of Police or, in his absence, the senior patrolman.

 

  1. Familiarize himself with the Ordinances of the Township of Springfield and the basic rights of citizens under the Constitution of the United States and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and all laws of same.

 

  1. Be aware before starting shift, of all stolen autos, missing persons, locations of recent property damage, or other police matters.

 

  1. Patrols a designated area of the Township to prevent and discover the commission of crime and to enforce traffic and parking regulations.

 

  1. Answers call and complaints, taking necessary police action.

 

  1. Maintains constant patrol of his assigned sector except to perform a police function, to take a proper lunch period, or for personal necessity. Confine his patrol within the limits of his sector except when making any arrest or making any urgent, investigation, or when ordered elsewhere by his superior officer.

 

  1. Furnishes information and assistance to anyone properly requesting or needing I, if not inconsistent with his work.

 

  1. Is responsible for all departmental property during the time it is used by him, and shall report any damage or defects prior to acceptance or use.

 

  1. Is responsible for inspecting his patrol car prior to going out on patrol and ascertaining that it I free of defects.

 

  1. Observe various banks and other financial institutions for suspicious persons and vehicles.

 

  1. Protect money being transported from various stores, churches, and banks.

 

  1. Investigate all complaints from malicious, mischief to any felony.
